About

About Chris Carter,

I started fishing at the age of 5 and now have over 40 years experience, with 30 years of that almost exclusively in fly fishing in the area. I am available for guiding and tuition on rivers, lakes and reservoirs and I am currently working on my Game Angling Instructors Association qualification to demonstrate my knowledge of the sport and to teach effectively.  I have fished abroad for saltwater species such as Bonefish and Tarpon in Cuba, which is much more fun than an English winter, though grayling fishing in the snow is an experience not to be missed. UK Bass fishing on the fly is becoming much more popular these days and makes for exciting sport as does fishing for our largest predator, the Pike on rivers, lakes and canals. If you would like to try any of these then please get in touch as I can advise on all of these.

I have been shooting for many years and I am a qualified Lantra Shooting Coach and Loader to ensure your safety. I am fully insured by BASC with £10 million legal and liability cover and work at one of the best clay target shooting grounds in the area, giving lessons and taking corporate groups shooting. I provide all the safety equipment and guns required to introduce you to the sport.

I hold the DSC1 Deer Stalking Certificate which gives a broad understanding of deer stalking techniques and deer management. This gives me Large Game Trained Hunter status and the Wild Game Meat Hygiene Certificate to meet the Food Hygiene Regulations 2004, meaning I can sell venison and other game into the food chain.

I am based in historic Harrogate and as an old spa town from Victorian times it makes an excellent base to explore the Dales, especially if you would also like a bit of night life with more bars, pubs and restaurants to explore than you could possibly visit in a year, never mind a week. Because of the International Conference Centre and the famous Great Yorkshire Showground and it’s Events Centre, it is a busy town all year round, any day of the week.

If you would like to be taken to some of the most amazing fishing and shooting in Yorkshire then give me a call or email me here.

GAIA – Game Angling Instructors Association The Game Angling Instructors’ Association is one of the oldest and most respected fly casting and instructing organisations in the world of fly fishing, with over 400 members throughout the UK, Republic of Ireland, Europe and the USA, there is a vast wealth of experience in all aspects of game angling. I am currently training as a professional instructor and am enjoying the challenge of putting 40 years of fishing experience to the test!

Knaresborough Anglers Club Set in the heart of the Dales near Harrogate, Knaresborough Anglers Club offers members some of the finest trout and grayling fishing in Yorkshire. With five and a half miles of the unspoilt River Nidd and a private three acre lake regularly stocked with rainbow, blue and brown trout, members have access to both premium still-water and river fishing in a beautiful location.

Nidderdale Angling Club Nidderdale Angling Club controls some 7 miles of double bank fishing on the River Nidd for brown trout and grayling, centred around the lovely Yorkshire Dales village of Pateley Bridge. The club also has wild brown trout fishing on Scar House Reservoir, located at the very head of Nidderdale. The Club was formed in 1897 by a group of local anglers in the Old Oak Inn, in the village of Low Laithe, near Pateley Bridge. It is excellent value for so much great water and varied fishing.

ABBAC – Appletreewick, Barden and Burnsall Angling Club The Appletreewick, Barden and Burnsall Angling Club is one of the oldest angling clubs in Wharfedale and was established in 1873. The Club control 6 miles of prime brown trout and grayling fly fishing water on the River Wharfe, from Linton Stepping Stones downstream to Barden Bridge, the village of Burnsall being roughly half way down. The character of the water and the fly fishing here is some of the best the River Wharfe has to offer. The club also have Lower Barden Reservoir which is stocked with brown, rainbow and blue trout in stunning surroundings where you can fish amongst the grouse on top of the moor. Many of the leading “North Country” angling masters of the past were members of the Club, these included Harfield H. Edmonds and Norman N. Lee authors of the classic “Brook and River Trouting” published in 1916 and Reg V. Righyni author of “Grayling” published in 1968.

Bradford City Angling Association Don’t let the name confuse you. Bradford City Angling Association does have fishing close to the centre of Bradford in West Yorkshire. But a quick look at their web page will show you just how many other fishing waters they have, scattered throughout North Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Dales. Both fly and course, rivers and stillwaters, it is excellent value with some great fishing on offer. Carp, match, fly, even Salmon and Sea Trout are available.

The Fly Dressers Guild – Leeds Branch I am on the Committee of the Leeds Branch and look after the website and social media as well as the technical side of the club’s events. Tying my own flies for many years has given me a greater understanding of imitative patterns and matching the hatch to improve your catches.

The Riverfly Partnership As an ARMI Monitor I take regular samples of the river fly life and submit data to the local ARMI Coordinator. The Riverfly Partnership is a dynamic network of organisations, representing anglers, conservationists, entomologists, scientists, water course managers and relevant authorities, working together to: – protect the water quality of our rivers; – further the understanding of riverfly populations; – and actively conserve riverfly habitats. The Riverfly Partnership is hosted by the Freshwater Biological Association.

Salmon & Trout Conservation UK – West Yorkshire Branch Formed in 1903, S&TCUK became a registered charity in 2008 and is now the only UK fisheries charity that campaigns for the conservation, protection and sustainable management of an aquatic environment capable of supporting an abundance of indigenous fish species, invertebrates, animals and plant life – from source to sea. The West Yorkshire Branch host some excellent talks on fishing and conservation in the area and I assist them with their website and social media.

The Grayling Society The Grayling Society was formed in 1977 by a small group of enthusiastic game fishermen who wished to conserve and establish the Grayling as a true, wild, game fish. Its core aims have remain unchanged – to promote Awareness, Conservation and Angling for Grayling. As a member I always enjoy fishing the annual grayling day with like minded people.

The Wild Trout Trust The Wild Trout Trust is a conservation charity that stimulates hands-on, in-the-water projects, helping others to help themselves with habitat improvement in and around rivers and lakes. Any individual or organisation caring for a wild trout population, anywhere in the UK or Ireland, can call on the Trust for practical help, advice and support. By ensuring a river is good for wild trout, it will be good for other wildlife too.

BASC – The British Association for Shooting & Conservation BASC is the national representative body for sporting shooting and has five strategic objectives: A strong and unified voice for shooting, All party backing for shooting, Balanced comment in the media, Continued opportunity to go shooting, High standards in shooting.

Lantra Lantra supports both individuals and companies to achieve personal and business growth via training. As a nationally recognised awarding organisation, they have over 40 years’ experience of developing quality training and qualifications which are designed to specifically meet the business and individual needs of those primarily working within the land-based and environmental sector. I am Lantra qualified in Shotgun Coaching and as a Loader.
