Coniston Hall

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Coniston Hall LakeConiston Hall Lake is just off the A65 Skipton Road at Coniston Cold near Gargrave. It is a beautiful 24 acre lake in the grounds of the Coniston Hotel Country Estate and Spa.

The fly fishing on the lake is excellent and it is an ideal location for beginners and more experienced anglers alike.
Fly fishing is best from one of the estate boats but the bank can also be good.
The lake is stocked with quality rainbow trout and there is a good stock of wild brown trout which grow to a very good size.
The lake is about 20ft at it’s deepest but it is mostly quite shallow. In summer the weed comes close to the surface but it is always fishable.

Sedgehogs fished on the top dropper always do well, as do others that create a disturbance and get attention such as a muddler or booby. General stillwater wet fly patterns will work along with lures and dry flies when the conditions are right. Patterns with orange in them seem to do well. The fish are often up on the surface so a floating line or intermediate are usually all that is necessary. In colder weather and deeper parts of the lake you may be able to use a sinking line but it’s not usually needed.

Coniston lake makes an excellent backup plan when you are fishing Malham Tarn. The weather at Malham can be very unpredictable and it is not uncommon for it to be blown out due to it’s high and exposed location. If there are white tops on the waves at Malham you will not be allowed to take a boat out and fish – and you probably wouldn’t want to when it’s like this! With it’s nearby location, in a natural bowl, Coniston is very sheltered and remains fishable. Returning from Malham down to the main Skipton Road via Bell Busk you turn right and Coniston Hall is only half a mile up the road.

The lake is open for fly fishing from 1st April to 1st October inclusive.
A full day’s fishing on the lake is £20.00 and boat hire is available for £12.00 (As of Sept 2016). There are no engines but you can bring your own electric motor. The lake is not too large so rowing wouldn’t be too strenuous if you don’t have the luxury of a motor.

There is an excellent and very large CPSA Premier Plus clay shooting ground on the estate with all disciplines covered, including a very high tower so if you are also into your shooting it would be a mistake to miss it as it is regarded as one of the best in Europe. There are also other activities such as archery, 4×4 driving, game shooting and falconry available.
